The Abbey library is one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. As early as the 8th century, the monastery of St.Gallen already had an impressive collection of books that was rapidly increasing in size. The current library room was built between 1758 and 1767 under the direction of the Bregenzerwäld construction master Peter Thumb. The changing exhibits of valuable manuscripts and unique specimens give a lasting impression of the St.Gallen monastery culture.
In the west wing of the monastery grounds you can find the Lapidarium ("Stone Collection") of the Abbey church. There you can see the archeological findings from the Carolingian monastery built betweeen 830 and 837, as well as the panel display "The culture of the Abbey of St.Gallen".
