Gallus trail

Walk in the footsteps of the Irish monk St. Gallus who, in 612, came from Arbon to St. Gallen, where he established his hermitage. A hundred years later, this small cell developed into the monastery, and the city gradually grew around it.

The Gallus Trail begins at Arbon railway station, follows the shore of Lake Constance and subsequently leads to Steinach. At the chapel in Arbon you can see the Gallus stone, which shows the footprints of Gallus.

The route continues through the village of Steinach and then more or less along the River Steinach, through meadows and woodland up towards St. Gallen. Following the impressive section through the Galgentobel Valley, you reach the City of St. Gallen, or to be more precise, the district of Neudorf. From here, beautiful streets will take you to the heart of the city, to the start of the Mühlenenschlucht Gorge where, following his fall into a thorn bush and encounter with a bear, Gallus founded his hermitage in 612, thereby laying the foundation for St. Gallen.
